I'm a sucker for numbers as well as the Bible so this book seemed right up my alley. I also thought the author, Ivan Panin, had a captivating testimony for why he became a believer. He was a well known atheist living in Russia who, having stumbled upon reading a certain Bible passage, started a lifelong investigation. The passage is as follows: "In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was with THE God and the Word was God." This is the literal translation of the famous verse in John, but most I'm a sucker for numbers as well as the Bible so this book seemed right up my alley. I also thought the author, Ivan Panin, had a captivating testimony for why he became a believer. The passage is as follows: "In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was with THE God and the Word was God." This is the literal translation of the famous verse in John, but most translations don't include that awkward "the" before God. But the question arises: why is there an article before "God" the first time and not the second time?

Panin began investigating this phenomenon by counting the number of words and number of letters in certain bible passages and found a strange association with the number seven. For instance, the number of words in Genesis 1:1 would be seven (or 7x1) and the numbers of letters would be 28 (or 4x7). He started digging deeper and started counting words that started with a consonant and words that started with a vowel ... and they too would end up being a multiple of seven. Much of this research wouldn't just stop at certain passages but expand through out the whole Bible. For example, the number of times the word "Moses" appeared in the Old Testament is a multiple of seven.

As one can imagine this business of counting and dissecting countless Bible passages is extremely tedious work. Panin literally wrote tens of thousands of pages of raw data over the course of multiple decades. Which is the kicker for my somewhat low rating ... this book isn't actually written by Panin, but is actually another author who looked at his data and is giving it to us in a digestible way (after all, who has time to look through tens of thousands of pages of raw numbers and figures? Certainly not the average Joe).

But this particular author, I felt wasn't that great of a writer. Certainly the subject matter is very interesting (e.g., numerical designs found in the Bible), but it was written in a very repetitive, nearly boring fashion, with countless phrases such as "amazingly newly discovered facts", "strangely hidden under the surface of the biblical text". These same lines would repeat themselves over and over again, I felt I was being over the head with the same points.

Don't get me wrong ... it's a good book if one wishes to increase their faith in the authenticity of the Bible (especially from such an unorthodox source) ... it's just not a very entertaining book and is somewhat poorly written.
